Tactical Corner: New Codex: Grey Knights lists

IMG_0419.PNG
So it’s fast approaching a week since Codex: Grey Knight hit and I’m finally getting around to working some lists out. So I have a couple here that you can try out.

1850pts Pure Grey Knights
This list is playing to the strengths of the new codex, cherry picking out a lot if the units that saw buffs or price reductions.

This is using the Nemesis Strike Force rule.

HQ
190pts
ML3 Librarian, Storm Bolter, Cuirass of Sacrifice , Soul Glaive, Domina Liber Daemonica.

125pts
ML3 Librarian, Terminator Armour, Force Stave.

Troops
442pts
9 x Grey Knight Terminators, 1 x Justicar, 2x Psycannon, 2x Force Sword, 8x Falchions.

Fast Attack
200pts
Stormraven Gunship, twin-linked Lascannon, twin-linked Multi melta.

Heavy Support

Nemesis Dreadknight, Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator, Heavy Psycannon and Nemesis Great Sword.

225pts
Nemesis Dreadknight, Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator, Heavy Psycannon and Nemesis Great Sword.

Tactics:
The pimped out librarian will be the warlord as he will be more survivable with his Curiass of Sacrifice and have the better weapon in challenges. He will however forfeit his psychic focus because of the he relic, but we get a free roll on the Sanctic table and he gives himself and units in 6″ re rolls for Daemonology.

For the 2 librarians psychic powers take the Telepathy Psychic discipline, rolling all 3 on this gives you a good chance of getting Invisibility. I think this is going to be the key.

The problem with the Alpha Deep Strike is that yes you get to drop in turn 1 but even with the shoot and run you are exposed to close range shooting from the enemy on the next turn.

So the idea is to Deep Strike in and make the 2 units if Terminators invisible increasing the chances of surviving to kick more ass. Even if they change you they are still swinging to hit on 6s and who is going to charge that units with 8 Falchions. That’s 3 attacks each on 8 of the terminators.

I added the Storm Raven Gunship purely to deal with any Flyer and the DreadKnights are there to murderise troops with the Incinerator or light armour/infantry with the heavy Psycannon. Then get in there and do good work with the Great Sword.

The Downsides:
For an 1850pt list this have a severely low model count, this will hopefully be offset by the Invisibility BUT you are not guaranteed to get it, thus another weakness. The low model count also makes it difficult to have board control and be spread across the objectives.

And finally, you need to roll well on your reserves, you don’t want to have an empty table at the end of turn 1 and lose by default. You could also end up trickling reserves in and feeding them to your enemy. To alleviate this, you could take and Aegis Line with a Comms Relay and your reserves will arrive turn 1 with a roll of 2+. You would have to sacrifice 70pts elsewhere though.

Mega monstrous invisible Psykers of doom list:
One of my worries with the above list is that it doesn’t have many shooty options to pop armour when they Deepstrike so you could land and just have all your shooting ping off the armour. So I started toying with Space Marine allies and some Sternguard in a drop-pod as I just so happen to have some painted up as Death Watch, Inquisition fluffy…. Almost.

It’s a more expensive list at 2000pts but here we go:

Primary; Grey Knights

HQ
185pts
ML3 Librarian, Storm Bolter, Cuirass of Sacrifice, Domina Liber Daemonica, Teleporter Homer and Melta Bombs.

130pts
ML3 Librarian, Terminator Armour, Force Stave, Storm Bolter.

Troops
442pts
9 x Grey Knight Terminators, 1 x Justicar, 2x Psycannon, 2x Force Sword, 8x Falchions.

442pts
9 x Grey Knight Terminators, 1 x Justicar, 2x Psycannon, 2x Force Sword, 8x Falchions.

Heavy Support
225pts
Nemesis Dreadknight, Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator and Nemesis Great Sword.

225pts
Nemesis Dreadknight, Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator and Nemesis Great Sword.

Allies; Red Scorpion Space Marines

HQ
175pts
Magister Severin Loth

Troop
60pts
4 x Space Marine Scouts and Scout Sargeant with free Apothecary upgrade.

Elite
185pts
4 x Sternguard Veterans, 1x Veteran Sargeant with free Apotehcary Upgrade.
2 x Meltaguns
Drop Pod with Storm Bolter and Homing Beacon.

Tactics:
Yes that list has 3 ML3 Psykers!

This takes the above lists concept of hoping to get Invisibility on all 3 Psykers, it’s guaranteed on at least Severin Loth.

So as above reserve everything, apart from the scouts and Deep Strike them turn 1. The Drop Pod automatically arrives as well.

With the 2 Librarians make their Terminator Squads invisible and with Severin make his Sternguard Invisible and blast away with those Meltaguns. Severin makes them Fearless and because of chapter tactics allows both the Sternguard and Scout to upgrade their Sergeants to be Apothecaries for free and so gives them Feel No Pain. For safeties sake stand Severin Loth closer to the shooting threat as he has 2+/2++ saves.

So you are gonna have 2 high Str Low Ap Meltaguns blasting away in a unit that you are hitting in 6s have 2+\2++ armour save and a Feel No Pain save who is Fearless.

This all might implode crazily but I think it will be a fun list to try!

I’d be interested to hear some of hot he lists you guys are working on!

One response to “Tactical Corner: New Codex: Grey Knights lists

  1. You might want to consider adding a comms relay on a cheap aegis defence line fortification to give you a re-rollable reserve roll, so combo it with the Nemesis Strike Formation for a 3+ re-rollable roll on 1st turn.

Also, I know you’re going for the GK mono-army build, but if you want a way to guarantee Invisibility, you might have to rely on allying Tigurius and a troop of basic marines / scouts to comply with Allied Detachment rules, and battle bros you can combo him with any terminator squad you want anyway.

lastly, possibly allying in back an Inquisition detachment using the Inquisition e-dex to get yourself some servo skulls would greatly benefit the deep strikers.
